The article presents a scientific analysis of the content and essence of the competency “Systemic and critical thinking” according to the Federal State Educational Standard, reveals a connection with the formation of professional thinking of a university graduate. The binary nature of the formation of professional thinking is revealed, that is, this process is presented at two levels: invariant (systemicity, criticality, consistent thinking) and variative (features and qualities of the profile professional thinking itself - medical, legal, etc.).
