The authors of the article set a goal – to consider the methodological aspect of mentoring in education. The focus of their attention is the extremely wide coverage of the field of mentoring. A methodologically sound view on the tasks of mentoring, types, forms and methods of mentoring is proposed; the functions and competencies of the mentor in education, his personal qualities. Approaches to determining the results and criteria for evaluating the activities of mentors are proposed; the conditions for the effective functioning of mentoring and the risks of largescale introduction of mentoring in social and educational practice are defined.
